Problem solved on getting it to seal.

Ended up converting a BSP tapered fitting to parallel with more thread and then using the recessed nuts i already had.

Went for a bit of lateral thinking, and the TIG. Should do that more often.

Now i have to pull it all apart and re-threadseal everything, because with all the pulling apart and refitting a few little leaks have appeared. Will avail myself of a new roll of pink plumbers tape and go for gold.
Still going strong:

Raced it briefly at a Dirty Deeds this year, but was too enthusiastic at getting back on the bike after a chest infection. But it does make an excellent bike for pedalling with the family.
Finally got around to getting some work done on this, plus the rest of the fittings arrived, so i put in the external return.

Lower whirlpool, upper to feed the mash:

How the malt pipe is fed. Will put some 10mm hose between and just lock in place during mash, low flow and low resistance so shouldnt pop off.

Finally what it looks like externally:

Currently waiting for the liquid PFTE to dry and then can leak test it again (failed the first time)

Well i managed to pick up a cheap 38L pot off eBay, cheaper than 2x19L BigW pots 🙂

Started modifying it today for the malt pipe:
After someone mentioned that you can get these pots on eBay i went looking, and found the 38L ones:

Much better size than the 19L BigW pots, and should work quite well for my purposes. Now to find time to get the rest of the bits together, and then start installing…

Been piecing stuff together for a little while now to go recirculation on my BIAB setup. Things accelerated a little bit last week when i was able to pick up some of those cheap 56L pots at a good price. Ultimately ill probably discard that pot for a nicer MegaPot or similar from the US when i head over in November. But until then this will get me going for now.

Ill be making two of these at the same time as a mate is after one as well.

Take one 56L pot:

With a 19L BigW pot for comparison:

19L pot will become the basis for the malt pipe.

With two 4500W Camco elements:

Planning on doing a two point recirculation. Just waiting for the last few bits to arrive for that.
Cyclocross Monstrosity

After some deliberation last year I made the jump across to a cross bike of some form for commuting on, rather than my SS converted to gears Larry. Based around an Avanti 29er hybrid frame, and some garish “Mosso” fork, it seems like it will be a good thing ™. Its made up of the drivetrain from my old commuter, plus some BB7s i scored cheaply, non-true wheels from eBay, and other bits of bling lying around the house. The Hones are off the 4X/DJ bike, and may go back there or just be replaced by the SLXs im getting from Moorey.

Take one Avanti frame

Apply paint stripper.

Should be a good thing its setup fully. Plus the mismatch of non-standard parts is at least just limited to bits off the shelf now.

Still needs a NW ring, which is in the post. Using a spare 34T from the DH bike atm, non NW, just single speed. Anyone want to make predictions on losing chains….

Polygon AX Trail Bike

Nah, no dropper. I have a body geometry where i can leave the saddle at a fixed point (620mm from the crank spindle) and be quite happy with the climbs and get enough clearance on the downs.

Took it out for a shakedown around Stromlo this morning. The bike is awesome. Pedals beautifully, with very little pedal bob even with the lockout turned off. Good suspension travel and progressive through the rate over the bumps. The low COG felt lovely to jump, and with the dual position Pike the front drops enough to negotiate all the techy climbs that i would want to do on this bike. The suspension combo is beautifully plush as well, just gorgeous. Its like riding a magic carpet.

Still need to get used to the lower BB height, as im clipping pedals a bit, and i screwed up with chaingrowth. Had a brainfart late when i was putting the chain on, and while it has play in the 42T its not enough. Probably needs another link or two. I blame jetlag. Still thats an easy fix, i even have a spare chain here, and the too short one will go in rotation for the XTC.

Anyway a few pics:

Also really glad i got out this morning, now thunderbolts and lightning, very very frightening indeed in Canberra!

Polygon AX Trail Bike

Its only taken 3 months, but i finally got the new main pivot bearings, and then promptly went away for a few weeks and was snowed under with work and beer.

Heading up to Canberra for a week with the extended family and so i built up the bike to take:

The rear brake line is touch and go, will be fine facing forwards, but under suspension compression and tighter turns wont be nice. I have a BH90 on its way to Canberra for fitting when i get there. Just annoying ill have to pack all those extra tools.

Also picked up some new XT Trail pedals for it, a minuscule upgrade from the M530s, and added the RaceFace crank boots.

Added a Blackspire Bruiser bash guard as well, sometimes i can be a little plow happy:

Bars are the finally installed Easton Haven Carbons from the super cheap sale on CRC back in August.

Somehow it only weighs 13.8kg, but im not sure how. Perhaps the scales are wrong:

Looking forward to giving it a go on Luge and Skyline.
