takai’s Garage

I got sick of having grinders lying around today and knocked this up for my proliferation of grinders:

Just need some new 3M cable straps to neaten the cables.

takai’s Garage

Sorted out the mounting today and got it all up in place:

Just used some 50×50 alloy angle that i had lying around spare.

Its mounted to the bracket that holds up the chain for the garage door opener, which in turn is mounted off the spring mount.

None of the stuff up there is remotely square to the roof, except my lights. But that does mean every time i look at the bracket it all looks out. More importantly it all clears the roller door as it moves.

Put some 3M hooks up on the ceiling to clip the wire into, but while im waiting for them to set i temporarily hooked it up to see how it goes:

Casts quite a lot of light for such small things. Well worth the $25 or so each.

Also got around to welding up a clamp holder thing on Boxing Day, which gets the majority of the clamps out of the way:

Those single hooks for the Rackit units are excellent for modifying to hold other things. The powdercoat/crinkle stuff does burn pretty well though.

takai’s Garage

Had a chance to keep unpacking the garage yesterday, decided to swap around the bandsaw and drill press, mainly to make access to power easier, and then able to keep the welding stuff together on the other side:
I really like the castors, nice being able to wheel things around.

Layout.. I think you’ve got it pretty spot on to be honest. Shelving storage on one side of the shed, (left hand side, if you always drive the car nose in) and doing stuff on the other side. Tool chests near the work bench. Most car work happens at the front so work bench near there. And maximise vertical usage, which you’ve done really well already. If you need more storage you could put a shelf/some racking above the toolbox/bandsaw. Similarly above the rubbish bins.
Funnily enough that is exactly what i did above the bins:
a couple of these above the roller door
Was planning on a pair of these actually: https://www.bunnings.com.au/philips-21w-4ft-diffused-lp20-smartbright-cool-white-led-batten_p4371386

Reckon i can put a steel angle bracket in up there off the center of the spring mount, and keep them tucked away above the door.

Just need another few hours to finish unpacking and its almost ready to go.

takai’s Garage

So i managed to start getting stuff setup and in place over the weekend. We brought over the main racks already complete, so just a matter of rewiring everything.

I mounted one LED panel light off a pair of clearance aisle brackets from Bunnings, with a chunk of 70×35 from the previous garage:

On the other side (forgot to grab a pic) i have chain hooked up to the racking with the other LED panel hanging from the chain (you can kind of see where the electrical lead goes in that photo.

The lighting down the other end of the garage sucks though:

So im trying to figure out some way of mounting lights on that end of the garage so that its not a dark dungeon down there.

Cabinet wise everything is roughly where it was in the old garage, except taking advantage of the width of this place by turning the workbench around.

I reckon in the long run ill put the bandsaw and drill press between the fridge and workbench, and then have a slightly more dedicated welding space next to the roll cab.
How’d you go with the new place? Interested in how you go setting that one up, currently working out my joint now – will be stealing the individual platforms for pedestal drill etc on castors off you :)
Funny you mention this, we only just finished moving in on Monday. Still tons to go in the garage, but for now its all there.

Snapped these photos half way through moving the racks, and before we started running out of time and just jammed everything in there. Its about a meter wider than the old garage i reckon

This weekend I should get enough time to start sorting out the garage properly, and put up the new lighting etc.

takai’s Garage

Yeah, it works really well. Means you have it always to hand. Cant remember where i saw it, but for something that can be made with scraps of wood lying around the shed, it is gold.

Also picked up this little guy on clearance from the green shed. All of $100.

Its not the best bandsaw in the world, but it will get the job done for smaller things that i regularly cut out.

Finished building the new control box for the brewery, and just had to give it a work out:

Works a treat. Just need two more cable grommets to add the pump control to the lit rocker switch on the front panel, and some labels for the switches.

Spent most of the afternoon sorting out some of the crates in the garage, getting there slowly.

Not much happening on my end of the world recently, primarily because of this:

Broke my big toe a couple of weeks ago, which has slowed me down noticeably.

Nevertheless, i did manage to get some shed time last weekend, and part of that was getting the bandsaw stand at least partly built:

Still needs a drawer built into it for saw blades etc, and a rebate milled in the top for positively locating the bandsaw but its pretty functional for now.

Started building myself a new dust collection system too, which called for cutting circles in wood. Built this with the 3d printer for one of my routers. Just uses 8mm threaded rod for adjustment, and a 608 bearing for location

Works very well.

Hope to get to build my table soon…

Spent half the day hobbling around the garage cleaning up and getting some stuff sorted out. More on that at the end of the weekend.

But importantly picked up this on Friday:

Decent quality welding table from the green shed.

Its on Promo for all the Aussies out there, see if you can find one locally if you want a half decent welding table. Cheap As

takai’s Garage

Went away for the weekend, so not much happened in the garage. But i did get a chance late last week to finish knocking up the paper towel and tape racks that sit above my main workbench.

Then today i finally assembled the new speaker stands for the study:

and then popped them in place:

Make quite a difference for the cost, especially with getting some separation and elevation from the rest of the setup. Total cost, under $20.

takai’s Garage

Got a couple of hours in the shed this Anzac Day afternoon after looking after a sick little boy for most of the morning.

Started building the new brewery controller. Found this control box at the metal recyclers when i was dropping stuff off a few months ago, and so set about cutting holes in it:

Once all the holes were cut and fettled it was time to start the wiring:

Wiring is about 1/2 done there, needs the SSRs fitted and then some tidying up with little sticky ziptie pads.

Oh and this is what happens when you run cheap Chinese SSRs flat out with insufficient cooling for a years worth of brew days:

Ooops.

takai’s Garage

Given schnitzelburger’s thread, and the small thread i have had going over on Garage Journal, I figure its probably time to transplant the GJ thread over here too for fun. First few posts are from GJ

Ive been lurking around here for a while now, but only got on board this year. Given that Facebook reminded me that i finished my old garage reno 6 years ago today, i figure i may as well start a thread for this current setup.

First though, a bit of context. I grew up doing a bit of everything, and then in my teens i got into motorsport and basically raced and tinkered with cars until my late 20s. 5 years ago now we moved from Adelaide to Melbourne, and so i had to leave my old garage behind.
This was the old garage that i had back in Adelaide:

Out the back was the dirty area, with the lathe, mill, drill press, welders etc; plus some storage stuff there too. Lathe and mill still live there.
This is what lived in that garage:

Along the way i built a few other cars in there, a MX83 Cressida, MA61 Supra and a TA22. Build threads for those are scattered around the interwebs.

Anyway, when we moved to Melbourne i had part of the garage to work in, of an old Italian house:

Then we moved to another place, and it was just a cramped long single garage

(Pics coming when i can find them)

In December last year we found another place in Melbourne and moved there. This place had a double ‘carport’ which was essentially a garage with an open end to the courtyard. This is what it was like when we first moved (had no time to pack properly, just shoved everything in when i got back from a work trip):

First thing on the agenda was to block in the wall. Now we are just renting so I opted for a temporary wall like is commonly used in office buildings.

Open

Framed

Closed and painted

I also built some drop in decking pieces to make those areas of the courtyard more usable as can be seen in the foreground of the last photo.

Since then i have been organising the space, so i can get some proper work done.

First thing on the agenda was to build a simple workbench to store stuff on and under, a simple Rack It shelving frame with 32mm of MDF on top did that easily:

Then get all the bikes and shelving organised

Next thing was to build a new assembly table/workbench/table saw bench:

…. and then decide you cocked it all up and need to swap the saws around:

Then build a new welding cart, that stores the gas cylinders on the side, rather than behind, so that it is under 600mm deep. New cart is to the left of the TIG, with the MIG already on it. Needs finishing off, but thats mainly rivnuts and a drawer.

Oh and build a new cart for the brewery, cant go without beer.

Thats about where it is now. This is what it looks like from the front:

The race car is still unloved too, and a bit of a dumping ground.

Need to sort out a bunch of the crates, notably the two sitting on the ground infront of the bikes, and then some of the ones in the rack unit that were just filled with random crap when we moved. Getting there slowly though.

Bit scared about this woodworking stuff though, and all that pesky sawdust!

takai’s Garage

Another year later, and i finally decided to sell the race car, it left the building last week. So i have spent the last few days cleaning up the garage and re-sorting stuff. Finally got it to this point:

Also shifted the vice over on the workbench, so then i can have area for the laptop and electronics stuff

A while ago i managed to get around to squeezing a 3mm piece of MDF in behind the workbench and screwed it to the cross rails. That allows me to glue thicker chunks of MDF to it in order to mount stuff to the backing, such as the chargers.

All clean again to work on a new project.

Right, so all of this is about to be moved again, but here is where we got to:

Moving to another place nearby with an almost identical garage (except this time i dont have to build a wall). Any suggestions on garage layout?

(And that is all up to date for now)
