Thanks Svenmate.

Also this got recorded by Sophie at the track. Its actually a video of Davey, but it gives you a good idea of what the car sounds like.

So… uh… BANG.

Wasnt the engine in the end though. Ended up being the flywheel. Got the engine out and the clutch off and it looked like this:

And off

Did some damage to the bellhousing too:

Currently my plan is to get the head off and see if there is any damage in the engine, but i suspect not. Feels ok when turning over by hand. If no damage then ill pop the head onto another spare short bottom end and race that (with a limited rev range) next weekend before rebuilding over the summer.

More pictures to come from Mallala, and the week leading up to it.

This weekend i had a quick little brainfart and decided that, 10 days before the car is off to get tuned, i should make a new airbox. Made it out of fibreglass, and its not quite finished yet, but it looks like it will work well. Ill let the pictures do the talking:

Firstly, finished building the airbox, so i can figure out where to put the intake.

Commitment ++. Just cut in half the airbox.

Refitted so i can figure out where to put the shape of the manifold.

Bit of aluminum bracing to put the intake snout where it i want it.

Insert florists foam.

Add one part fibreglass…. or many parts FG.

Just added a little bit of reinforcement to the base tonight and tomorrow after its cured ill be popping it out of the mould to see how its worked.
Its not as good as i had hoped, but it will work for an initial job, ill probably redo it over the summer, but it will be good for now.

Other than that there is buggerall left to do. Add a few coats of paint to the bonnet and guards and a quick retune and we will be good to go racing.

Just a little update on how its gone. Popped it out of the plug tonight, which once i had released the glue on the paper tape it released quite easily. Well most of it anyway. There is still a layer of the foam/hifill primer stuck to the inside of the plenum where the resin has saturated the foam and essentially glued it together. Unfortunately its not completely integrated, so ill have to pull it out.

Anyway, pictures speak louder than words:

Fresh from plug

Fitted up, ran out of washers and bolts for the remaining holes.

Other side

In addition while i was already all itchy from fibreglass i rewrapped my extractors and then went one step further and made a heat shield for them too:

Bit OTT? Never.
Bought some heat wrap stuff from Andy San for the oil cooler lines too, plus i might build a little Alu heat shield for that area too.

Thats about it for tonight, as im itchy as all hell from the fibreglass.

As much to keep me motivated as anything, a little update.

Fixed up the coilpack mounting plate, including machining some little spacers for it and adding rivnuts to the plate:

Made up the oil cooler lines to the right length, and testfitted:

The one from the cooler to the remote filter isnt particularly nice, but i cant use a 90 off the remote filter because it wont curve down enough to fit through the hole. Ohwell.

And from the front:

Oh and redid the brake bias valve lines:

Just a bit neater than they were before.

Very little to do now, just need a new battery clamp as the old plastic had perished and broke in half when i tried to tighten it…
Have to slap in the tailshaft and add oil to the gearbox, plus oil for the engine and put the starter/exhaust/intake on, and its good to crank over and start.
